How Do Repeater Channels Work?
When you transmit on Channels 1 through 8, you're not talking directly to another radio. You're transmitting to a repeater station — a radio relay mounted on a hill, tower, or high point that picks up your signal and rebroadcasts it at much higher power.
The repeater listens on Channels 1–8 and rebroadcasts on Channels 31–38 respectively. So when you use Channel 2 with duplex enabled, your voice goes to the repeater on 2 and comes back out on Channel 32 — which other radios in range can hear.
Repeaters exist across Australia — particularly along major highways and in national parks. Channels You Should Never Transmit Voice On
Two channels are off-limits for voice: Channels 22 and 23. What Are CTCSS Tones and Coded Squelch?
